AIPAC Campaign to urge assistance to Israel.

Dear Representative,

I am writing to urge you to support security assistance for Israel.

The security assistance for Israel, expected to be included in the fiscal year 2010 budget, would represent the second year of a new 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reached in 2007 by the United States and Israel. The plan seeks to gradually increase U.S. security assistance to Israel during the next decade to help the Jewish state face increasing threats — from a potential nuclear-armed Iran to the increased military capabilities of Hizballah and Hamas.

Amid such threats, Israel spends more on defense as a percentage of GDP than any other major industrialized country in the world, and nearly twice as much as the United States.

The military hardware — including American-built naval vessels and advanced fighter aircraft — that Israel must acquire over the next decade to maintain its qualitative military edge are more complex, diverse and expensive than previous systems.

Both countries have long recognized that their mutual interests in deterring war, promoting stability and eventually achieving peace are only possible if the United States continues to ensure Israel’s qualitative military edge over its potential adversaries.

I respectfully urge you to support this vital security assistance to Israel.
